In 1840, William Muirhead established a tannery on the banks of the Medwin Water at Blyth Bridge, Peebleshire. That tannery still operates today. The process, the place, and the people have remained largely unchanged — what has changed is the standard expected.
Muirhead leather now flies in the seats of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, rests in the cabins of Rolls-Royce motor cars, and lines the lounges of five-star hotels. We have supplied leather for British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and the Palace of Westminster. Our hides are tested to the most demanding flammability and environmental specifications on earth.

Our tannery sits in the Upper Tweed valley in the Scottish Borders, surrounded by the same landscape that has shaped Muirhead since 1840. The clean, soft water of the Medwin Water was historically central to the tanning process — and the area’s tradition of leather craft runs deeper than any single business.
Today, Blyth Bridge operates to ISO 14001 environmental standards, with closed-loop water treatment and an ongoing programme to reduce the carbon intensity of every hide we produce. When you buy from the Outlet, there is no intermediary. You are buying directly from the tannery.
